I. The Descent into Matter

When the uncorrupted desire of the gods penetrates matter, it becomes ensnared in time and space with only one hope of ever escaping. That hope rests with the human soul. Allegorically, this is Eros having his wings clipped by Chronos—the first threshold of Desire, where the eternal is bound by the temporal.
II. The Rising to the Heart

The youthful god can no longer soar; he must find Psyche, the soul, to regain his freedom with her.
On its path, Desire penetrates through the feet, stirs in the loins, and refines through the solar plexus to reach the heart, because the human heart beats at equal distance between thought and sex drive. Eros now stands at the door of the bridal chamber. This is the second threshold of Desire. Its allegory is “Love locked out.”
III. The Sleep of Latency

Meanwhile, the soul (our memories), replete with longings, descends from the head toward the heart. It is the Lover’s longing for a love beyond the stifling confines of earthly existence that unlocks the door of the heart to the Beloved.
In the dark, Eros finds his way to the wedding bed. Figuratively, Desire now rests and must be awakened. This is Eros asleep in the chamber of his palace, waiting for Psyche to enter—the third threshold of Desire.
IV. The Lamp of Gnosis

Desire is asleep in the human heart. It lies in a state of pure potential; its power is dormant.
By lighting the lamp of gnosis, Psyche awakens her Salvation and reveals the forms of the Beloved—the image of a god projected onto matter and reflected by the soul. This is the fourth threshold of Desire.
V. The Triumphant Ascent

Eros rises triumphant at the fifth threshold, now empowered to burst open the gates of spacetime and break the chains of matter. Together with the soul, he departs the world of chaos and pain.
Free at last, the Beloved and his Lover ascend beyond the final threshold into the realm of beauty and harmony. Their child will be Hedone—eternal delight.
